I tried it in an algae bath John on tour...trying to multi task. I just got very sleepy! but i've done alot of concentrated time on my back with my breath in yoga.

Sat 15. Thoughts everywhere which was strabge as I'd had a calm day cleaning the house and sleaning up my computer files. thought purifying the mind would naturally follow but it didn't!

Rain sounds good, Dale.

I am coming to Lndon on Dec 10th and may even get to a bookstore so would love some reading recommendations on meditation, particularly Tibetan Buddhist. I have geshe Kelsang Gyatso New Meditation handbook and the Sharon salzburg:Joseph Goldstein Insight meditation. Would love something mre about the objects of meditation which I could read before each sitting so any suggestions very welcome as I prepare my booklist.

It's not always easy to find, but Alan Wallace's book (I hope the link will come through, here) -- Boundless Heart -- is one that I used to read for five or ten minutes, often, before sitting. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1559391197/qid=1130869982/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-5367851-2071200?v=glance&s=books

Wallace knows a lot about shamata.

Hmm, well, it's not a real link, but if I paste that into a browser I do get to the right place. (I wrote a review of it there, if you scroll down to the bottom.)

I don't remember him talking a whole lot about the objects of meditation per se, but if I could bring only one meditation book with me to a desert island, that would be it.

Well, if John's lying-down counts as meditation, surely my sitting on the couch earlier tonight counts, too. :-)

I've had about 5 minutes of "down time" today, and I spent it on the couch "just" sitting & breathing. It's not much...but at the time, it felt like *exactly* what I needed.

I didn't sit this morning. My routine's been disrupted, which always makes it extremely difficult for me to get the sitting in. I'm aiming for this evening, after dinner.

Dale, thanks. The book looks interesting.

Ruth: an algae bath? You introduce me to so many things! Tell me about this one?

Sat on Tuesday. Quiet - paid attention at one point to (very beautiful) birdsong outside and watched my mind go down the path of "I wonder what kind of bird that is".

Don't seem to be willing to go beyond 10-15 mins which I think I ought to be able to do by now. Something in me says "No I won't" and stops. Fear of going too deep? Panic? I think it may be.

But I wouldn't dream of stopping sitting. It feels like brushing my teeth now, something I don't consider not doing.

thanks dale. I'll buy it on amazon. looks good.

moose - An algae bath is a bath with some expensive healthfoodshop green slimy seaweed product in it which you buy when you're on tour and in need of comfort! It's supposed to relax you. Personally I favour good old lavender oil myself. You've heard of that moose my poor protected lamb?

today I think I'll take my meditation lying down on the couch whilst eating leftover apple crumble and watching an episode of the West Wing on telly. Does that count?

I'll try and get the Alan Wallace book. I was reading recently about the project he's involved with for 2006, to study behaviour and brain changes in 30 people meditating 8-10 hours a day. Wow!

Some favourite buddhist meditation books: Change Your Mind by Paramananda (FWBO), Radical Acceptance by Tara Brach (Insight + Jungian therapy), Breath by Breath by Larry Rosenberg (Insight), A Path with Heart by Jack Kornfield (also Insight, I think Ruth's got that already, you mentioned it in your blog once), anything by Rob Nairn (Tibetan).
