Good morning all. Don't have to be at work so early. Haven't meditated yet but intend to do so later.
Hi Brenda: Thanks for the kind thought re posting. This blog time is GMT which I believe (?) is 5 hours ahead of Toronto time. If that fitted in Dale or Ruth could I think give you the rights to post the date. But you are right to add that sleep comes first!!!
Morning. Got up so late today that I rushed from the house without even THINKING about sitting (amazing how I can do this, having sat most mornings for, what is it, about 130 days now? My potential for unawareness is limitless). Like Dale, ugh, I'm tired by Friday. Will sit later.
Beth, very glad to hear that your medical appointments went well, and thinking of you for the last one.
Beth hope the news on tests continues to be good.....I cant imagine anything better for the niggling fearful mind than this practice so it looks like you are giving yourself the best treatment.
Not sure about how to organise other people to post...best check with dale on that one!
thanks so much for your encouragement, dale. I find the possibility of change of such old but such unwanted habits very exciting.
sat today after running and yogic stretching in the vines. An intense sunheat beating on my face, mountain behind....what better inspiration for peace..;and so along came the military planes and a police helicopter and I just let them in to the soundscape. All this seems to connect to letting go of 'me' and 'mine': my house, my silence, my husband, even my mind. Long long way to go and now so thrilled I'm on this journey with you all.
Ai, Ruth, military planes and police helicopter! Congratulations for being able to put that into the background.
Good morning. I sat for about 15 minutes or so. Pretty distracted, but moments of stillness. Mainly telling myself that I'm showing up and committing to be there with myself, even during agitation.
I have been feeling deep appreciation for this very supportive group. Thanks, all of you, each of you, for your warm thoughts these past few days. (My friend is in limbo this week awaiting news as to how much or what sort of life she has ahead of her.)
Beth, I'm very glad to hear that you got good news, and I hope that soon you'll be able to put this chapter at least somewhat behind you. This can't have been easy.
And meanwhile, each of us forges on in our own worlds, dealing with whatever we must deal with, and yes, the ability to step back, to let go from 'me' and 'mine' and just let be... is a blessing when I can do it. Jean, your comment about limitless potential for unawareness made me laugh because I so often feel that way. I'm continuously reminding myself of my need for self-compassion.
Brenda, I was interested by your thoughts on being centered in the body. Perhaps partly because I tend to NOT center in the body, I agree that it's important. Never understood the other perspective of denying the body.
I just now sat for 20 minutes: I haven't been meditating "first thing" as I'd like, but midday is better than nothing. I'll have to re-arrange my schedule next week when I'm back to teaching face-to-face classes, but I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
Since I sat right after lunch, I didn't do bows (prostrations & food do *not* mix!) So I plan do my daily dose later this afternoon or tonight.
In the meantime, though, I'm feeling the "burn" from the bows I did yesterday! (I think this sensation is part of being "centered in the body"!)
Cooking as Zen practice ... Jude I love your webpage about gardens and real food. I almost wept this morning when I read your entry about ginger ... made me homesick for the time I spent living at the temple in Hawaii, where the ginger was growing wild in the ditches beside the dusty road
I think my happiest time in life (so far) was when I was Tenzo (head cook). The kitchen is a place of transformation. In the Zen tradition, serving as Tenzo is considered an excellent opportunity to practice. The literature is filled with kitchen anecdotes and stories of enlightenment coming through simple daily chores.
There is more to cooking than meets the eye. Dogen said, 'when you prepare food, do not see with ordinary eyes and do not think with ordinary mind .... this is a miraculous transformation - a work that benefits sentient beings'
Today I'm making Jude's recipe for long beans and corn with garlic for friends I love.
How wonderful to come each day and read the comments that have accumulated like blessings. It's one of my favourite parts of the day.
Beth, I'm so glad, and I hope the news continues to uplift you...
I love that you forgot to meditate this morning, Jean! Or, perhaps you have become so accustomed to your morning meditation that you were doing it while getting ready and rushing out the door... :)
Janice, hearing about your background as a, oh how delightful, zen cook, made my day, well evening now!
I'm about to meditate and then crawl into bed, hopefully to sleep deeply.
How about, whoever from the old group is up at 5am EST, or the equivalent (I can't presently think in any other time zone than the one I'm in, forgive), post the day? That way if Jean or Mary, who might have been doing it mainly that week, sleep in or are too busy, they don't need to worry.
If the old day is still up and I'm awake after 5am, I'll post the new day.
In other words, the onus is on all of us, taking it off those who've been keeping us on timeline track, though I'm sure they'll still mostly post the daily update.

Off to sit, now that I'm all inspired!
